Room 5 Newsletter (Term 3)

Dear Parents,
Haere mai and welcome back to school for Term 3. I hope everybody had an interesting winter break and a chance to recharge the batteries. The highlight of the break for me was  a family trip to Wanaka where we climbed nearly all the way a mountain called Mt Roy and skied at Cardrona for a day. Did anybody else have a chance to hit the slopes?

Term 3 is going to be a  cracker of a term because we will be doing a lot of science with our theme for the term being “Growing our Kai”. We will be taking a close look at the structure and function of plants and what factors affect their growth. This will involve planning and carrying out our own experiments with the aim of presenting them in a science fair at the end of the term.
Here is a brief outline of what will be happening this term:

 1. Writing- procedures such as recipes, instructions, and science experiments
2.  Reading- reading information reports based on mammals and reptiles and in Week 4 we will be celebrating Book Week.
3. Maths- Fractions and ratios followed by measurement later in the term.
4. Inquiry Studies- Plant based science experiments and a Learnz virtual field trip: “Freshwater Ecology”. We will be working hard towards a science fair at the end of the term.
5. PE and Sport- Large ball skills with a rugby and netball tournament scheduled for Thursday of Week 2.
6. Te Reo Māori- We will be focusing this term on counting objects and saying where things are using location words.
7. Homework- We are now halfway through the year so well done to those people who have gained five or more stars for their Te Waihora Challenge 2013. Keep chipping away at it team!
8. Learning Conversations- We are planning to have these in Weeks 5 & 6.

Ngā mihi mahana ki a koutou
Warm regards to all,
Matt Thomas

Soccer & Hockey Tournament (Zarah & Zayden)

Yesterday we all went to Burnham to play in the hockey and soccer tournament. We had to wear a sports uniform which made us look small because the uniforms were a bit big for us.
I was in the hockey team ‘B’. We were a really great team and we won 4 games with just 3 losses. Zeke was a really skilled at getting the ball in the goal. Meanwhile Zayden was in the scoccer A-team. They had to play 9 games of 10 mintues each. They lost all games apart from one draw but they tried their best!

Hockey Tournament (Mya)

Yesterday I went to Burnham for the hockey tournament. Lucy and I were playing for Greenpark because they were two players short. We won four games and lost three which got us to sixth place. The first game we won 1-0 and the next we lost 1-0. The next game we won 2-1 and after that we lost 1-0 before a shocking 5-0 loss. We won the rest of the games.
When we came back to school we heard the bad news that one of the Springston players went to hospital with a cut on her head. On the other hand, the good was that the Springston A-team are going to Canterbury to compete. At the end of the day I thought Greenpark did well because we played safe and didn’t shout and jeer if we won.

Soccer Tournament (James and Max)

Yesterday Max and James went to the annual Lincoln Zones Hockey/Soccer Tournament and played for the junior A&B Soccer teams. Max was in the B team and James was in the A team. The A Team tied one game and lost the rest of our games. We were excited to get the tie. We played 11 games of 5 minutes each way. James scored 4 goals and Max saved heaps with his great defending. At the end Mr T got all the good players from both teams and made the Super team which James & Max got into. It was a great day of football.

Soccer Tournament (Graeson & Sophie R.)

Yesterday we went to Burmham to play in a soccer tournament. My team was the A team and we had 11 games in total. We had one draw and lost the other games even though we tried our best. The B team won two but lost five games. For the last game Mr T made a team out of the B team and the A team which we won. At the end of each game we shook hands with the other team and said, "Thanks for the game" to show our good sportsmanship. I think that with every game we played we got better and better. Next year we would like to make a stronger defense.

Hockey Tournament (Zeke & Brodie)

Yesterday the Year 5s and 6s went to a hockey tournament at Burnham. Zeke and Cloe played really well while I was at the back with the goaly. Zeke, Cloe and Lydia were trying to get a goal and stopping the ball getting to the other opponents. Meanwhile the ref kept on blowing the whistle because the other team were constantly lifting their hockey sticks to high and kicking the ball. But even known they cheated a lot we ended up winning. By the end of the day we had scored so many goals and won four of our seven games. It was an amazing day.

Hockey Tournament (Lucy & Caelan)

Winter Hockey Tournament (Zoe)

Yesterday I played nine games of Hockey at Burnham. I played in the A team and we won one, drew one and lost seven. Also I think we played our best we won against the Weedons team. The score was 1-0. A lot of us got bumps and bruises. I was off for the first two games and then for the second to last game. Everyone would like to go back next year!

A Big Kiwi Night Out (Nathan and Libby)

On Wednesday night we were at the Lincoln Events Centre for the Big Kiwi Night Out, or Wearable arts, to celebrate the learning that we had been doing for kiwiana. The whole school was involved showing off what they had made or done in front of all the parents.

Libby was in the group called “I see red.” They made a red building as a prop that was part of the routine that Brodie and Libby held on the stage. They dropped the building and came out clapping and they finished the dance with Ellie and Sophie!

Nathan was in the group ‘6 months in a leaky boat.’ He was wearing a sailors hat, a silky jacket, and black shorts. They were in boat that was made by Craig. It had a pull up sail and cartoon looking planks. It wasn’t heavy and it had a split in the wood. On the night they couldn’t turn round at one of the corners and Ben went off the stage really fast as the music stopped earlier than expected.

It was a exciting but nervy night but we all had a heap of fun!
